Paintings

Since 2017, I’ve been trying my hand at oil painting. Plenty of mistakes. But a few decent tries along the way.

When I was a kid, I used to fill the margins of my text books with doodles. This really irritated the hell out of my teachers. I hadn’t taken an art class since 5th or 6th grade, but I did occasionally use the rarely-practiced skill for something as I adulted, like a Christmas card.

In 2017, I was hunting around for a resolution, and spotted some oil paints and a canvas in a local craft store. These are some of the more acceptable results of my amateur efforts to learn to put paint on square-ish things.

Sometimes, they take a while to work their way out of the brush.

This one took months to complete, as I was afraid of screwing up what I liked about it.

This was one of my first attempts - took me for-freaking-ever, but it tugs me back to my spiritual roots in the south.

Also: chickens.

Sloan Branch Road

Painting for my step-father - from a photo taken on the road to his home in Tennessee. Mostly done with a palette knife.

Pink Magnolia

Pink Magnolia

There was a pink magnolia tree just outside my office window that had to be taken down. All done with a palette knife.

But this may still be the favorite piece I’ve ever done.

California valley

California valley

This piece is 36”x48” - the largest I’ve attempted, and done because I really wanted something to hang behind my desk, as the plain wall was getting a little boring to see in the background of WebEx calls.

Mostly inspired by the California valley.

This ended up being claimed by a friend, and happily hung on their wall. Which made me remarkably proud.

10” x 16”. Or something like that.

I don’t know if I’ll ever finish this. I rather like it as is, and am terrified of screwing it up.

Largish.. mostly palette knife, and trying to remember what Monterey Bay looked like. Not terribly happy with it. but Giuia snatched it up and said it was hers. Until I get tired of it and try again.

I did a whole set of 6”x6” quick efforts (less than 20 minutes) - finding something around the yard to paint.

Sunlight & meadow

Sunlight & meadow

I had this long, rectangular canvas for about a year, sitting in the corner, with sort of an idea as to what I wanted to do with it.

Done almost entirely with a palette knife.
